Interior Design considers the design of the immediate physical environment. Interior designers plan the inside places of homes, public buildings and commercial establishments. They analyze clients' needs and requirements, lay out space, prepare working drawings and specify interior materials and finishes. They also work to develop appropriate heating and lighting plans, prepare budgets and construction drawings and supervise the installation of the design project. Courses are focused on the technical and aesthetic aspects of spaces. Courses will provide instruction in: Drafting, both traditional and computer assisted History of architecture and furnishings Space planning for residential and commercial spaces Sustainability and green design Sketching and rendering Government regulation of buildings, including materials and accessibility A grade of C- or better is required in all courses within the major. Courses within the major may not be taken with S/U grading. Students can choose one of the following options: Housing Studies Interior Design Housing Studies option The Housing Studies option offers students the opportunity to focus on residential design, universal design, and housing policy and real estate. Interior Design option The Interior Design option offers students the opportunity to focus on commercial design with an emphasis on space planning, heating and lighting plans, and interior construction specifications. Job Opportunities The demand for interior designers is high. OSU graduates have become interior designers in design firms, specializing in a particular area such as kitchen design, space planning or lighting design. Graduates have also pursued careers as manufacturers' representatives who show lines to retail buyers.
