The Master's Program in Cultural Heritage understands heritage as a living legacy that transforms with communities. It trains professionals capable of valuing, conserving, and managing tangible and intangible assets from an interdisciplinary and critical perspective. Here, heritage is not just memory: it is identity, participation, and the future, socially activated to strengthen culture and respond to contemporary challenges.
Cultural heritage, tangible or intangible, is a living legacy: it resides in the knowledge of communities, in stories passed down from generation to generation, in archives, in music, in collections, in buildings, in monuments, in festivities, in recipes, and so on. However, this legacy is not always safe, either because it has not been recognized as heritage or because it is at risk of disappearing.
The Master's Program in Cultural Heritage at the University of the Andes understands heritage not as something static or frozen in time, but as a living resource that needs care, understanding, and projection into the future. Its purpose is to train experts capable of recognizing the value of this cultural wealth, protecting it from the risks it faces, and helping it remain meaningful for contemporary society and, in particular, for the communities with which it is connected.
The program takes on the challenge of preparing professionals committed to preserving heritage and its responsible transmission to present and future generations. This means learning not only to conserve objects or traditions, but also to understand why they are important, for whom they are important, and how they can continue to have value in changing contexts.
To achieve this, the program offers comprehensive and interdisciplinary training. It brings together diverse perspectives and areas of expertise, enabling students to study, manage, value, and conserve cultural heritage from multiple viewpoints. Special emphasis is placed on the social activation of heritage, that is, on the active participation of the communities that create, experience, and transform it every day.
Through academic internships, research groups, and applied research projects, Master's students work directly with concrete territorial realities. In this way, academic knowledge connects with the daily lives of communities, promoting not only the preservation of heritage but also its responsible use and collective appropriation. In this process, Colombian cultural heritage is strengthened as a key element for the country's identity, memory, and social development.
