The existence of the Music Arts Education Study Program at the Faculty of Art and Design Education, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) is actually rooted in efforts to develop arts education at UPI since the era of IKIP Bandung. In the 1980s–1990s, basic music courses—including music theory, music history, and ensemble practice—were held under the Department of Dance and Performing Arts Education, as part of an effort to enrich the quality of arts teacher education. Several music lecturers at that time, such as Dr. Maya Sari, M.Pd., and Dr. Budi Hartono, M.Sn., actively developed project-based music teaching modules, thus strengthening the academic foundation in the field of music arts education.

In 2011, responding to the need to formalize music educator competencies and growing public interest, UPI officially established the Music Arts Education Study Program as a separate undergraduate program (S1). The official name “Music Arts Education Study Program” reflects a holistic curriculum designed to equip students with practical skills (instruments, vocals, conducting), music theory, music history, and music teaching methodology. From the outset, the learning system adopted a project-based approach—presenting student concerts, developing studio curricula, and creating music e-learning modules.

Responding to global dynamics and technological developments, the curriculum was thoroughly revised in 2015: specializations in Composition & Arrangement, Digital Music Technology, and Traditional Music of the Archipelago were added. Students were given the flexibility to choose cross-disciplinary courses—such as ethnomusicology, arts journalism, and cultural management—to produce adaptable and competitive graduates. Key figures in this phase include Dr. Lina Pratiwi, M.Mus., who led the curriculum development team, and Dr. Agus Nugroho, M.Pd., a pioneer of the digital music laboratory.

Following UPI's status as a State University with Legal Entity (PTN-BH) in 2009 and its increasing institutional independence, in 2018 the Music Arts Education Study Program was strengthened with the establishment of a Traditional Music Laboratory, a Recording Studio, and high-tech interactive classrooms. The success of the Unggul accreditation in 2022 confirms the quality of its implementation. To date, the Music Arts Education Study Program continues to expand its network—with partner schools, art studios, and foreign universities—and produces graduates: music educators, research assistants, studio managers, vocal coaches, composers/arrangers, and educational musicians who are ready to contribute to the world of education and the creative industry.
