History of the Adriatic and of the Mediterranean

The undergraduate programme History of the Adriatic and Mediterranean is a unique humanities curriculum at the University of Dubrovnik, designed in response to contemporary scientific and societal needs. The programme focuses on the history of the Adriatic and Mediterranean regions, a space of rich and layered pasts that connects Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
The curriculum develops both practical and interdisciplinary skills by including courses in auxiliary historical sciences, cultural management, and digital tools. This combination allows students to pursue career opportunities beyond academia, including positions in cultural institutions, media, and the creative industries. The programme also provides a broad humanistic education, integrating knowledge from history, art, demography, literature, and the social sciences. This approach enables students to gain a comprehensive understanding of historical processes and contemporary cultural challenges. 
Graduates of the programme will be able to identify and interpret the fundamental processes and structures that have shaped the history of Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Adriatic from ancient times to the present. They will be able to evaluate the interconnection and inseparability of Mediterranean and Adriatic history, highlighting the Adriatic’s contribution to Mediterranean historical and cultural heritage. Graduates will be able to define the main theoretical frameworks, scientific methods, methodological principles, and research orientations of various fields and directions in contemporary historical science. They will be capable of summarizing and analyzing extensive scholarly literature on Mediterranean history, as well as works representing contemporary theoretical and methodological trends in historiography and the humanities. Graduates will gain insight into historical motifs in European and Mediterranean culture, including contemporary popular culture, and will be able to critically assess scholarly and journalistic works on historical topics, evaluating their validity, relevance, and originality, as well as producing their own reviews and analyses of historiographical content while upholding the fundamental ethical standards of historical science.
Thanks to its interdisciplinary approach, the programme provides graduates with a wide range of knowledge and skills suitable for employment in cultural institutions such as museums, archives, and libraries, in the education sector, in tourism and cultural management, and in media and publishing. The combination of historical expertise, communication skills, and knowledge of cultural heritage makes graduates well-qualified to present and preserve the heritage of the Adriatic and the Mediterranean.
The undergraduate programme History of the Adriatic and the Mediterranean lasts three years, or six semesters, and is worth 180 ECTS credits.
