Overview

The University of Nicosia (UNIC) is the largest university in Cyprus, and the largest university in Southern Europe that teaches primarily in English, welcoming over 12,000 students from over 70 countries across the globe.

UNIC has been investing in developing programmes, sometimes with partner universities focusing on global careers, building research capabilities in areas relating to the 4th industrial revolution, and improving the student experience both on-campus and online.

A Global University

In line with our strategy for internationalisation and global outreach, we have established regional study centres in Athens, Greece; Bucharest, Romania; and New York City, New York, USA. Our vision is to support our students globally and to enhance academic, research and industry collaboration with leading universities and companies around the world.

UNIC founded and operates the first and largest medical school in Cyprus, in partnership with St George’s, University of London, the only university in the UK dedicated to medicine, healthcare and science. We also offer a series of innovative joint degrees with other leading universities in Europe.

Moreover, UNIC has been a pioneer in online education in Europe, supporting both its own degree programmes, as well as those of its joint degree partners throughout the region. In this regard, UNIC was recently awarded a 5-Star QS rating for Online/Distance Learning, becoming the first university in the European Union to be recognised in this way by the QS Intelligence Unit.

UNIC also stands out for a number of global university firsts in its dynamic initiative in cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. More specifically, it was the first university in the world to: (a) offer a course and Master degree programme in the field; (b) deliver graduates from a programme of this type; (c) publish academic certificates and diplomas on the blockchain.

Schools and Departments

The University of Nicosia comprises six schools offering more than 100 conventional on-campus and online programmes of study, with particular strengths in medicine, health sciences, education sciences, blockchain, law, accounting, architecture, and international relations. In fact, many of our degree programmes and departments were the first of their kind in Cyprus and the wider region. We provide a fully digital student-centric educational environment that promotes teaching and learning innovation, inspired by technology and driven by pedagogy.

We founded the first and largest medical school in Cyprus. We are also a recognised global leader in certain fields, such as our very successful initiative in Digital Currency/Blockchain Technology. In fact, we were the first University in the world to offer a course and a Master degree in these areas.

Research at UNIC

The University of Nicosia participates in a wide field of research, with local and international interest. Recognising that the research challenges of the future are multidisciplinary, with modern problems requiring solutions with a range of approaches; UNIC seeks to combine the potential of multiple disciplines and synergies with other universities and research centres.

In light of the above, UNIC actively participates in a variety of programmes, including those undertaken by the European Commission regarding the future of Europe. Examples include UNIC’s participation in four Horizon2020 research projects, in collaboration with major universities and research centres in Europe and Israel, with the most recent research project (DIALLS) falling under the guidance and coordination of the University of Cambridge.

Through its participation in various research projects, as a partner or coordinator, UNIC has developed a broad base of knowledge and expertise in terms of producing research, and the management of the entire research process. UNIC researchers focus on exploring modern challenges, including new technological and scientific advancements, as well as humanities and social sciences.

In the context of its vision of becoming a pioneering institution in education and research, UNIC has also contributed significantly to the creation of 25 research centres and related academic institutions. Among them is the Institute for the Future (IFF), which focuses on three major areas of research and study: Enhanced and Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence, and Blockchain/Cryptocurrency Technologies.
