Our Master of Arts program will prepare you to enter a doctoral program or the workforce as a teacher or pursue other career options. You will complete 33 credit hours, which includes courses in historical research, historiography, and courses in American, European, and/or world history. This program is also useful if you are looking to professionalize your secondary school teaching license. Throughout your time here, you will have the opportunity to work alongside notable professors, conducting research with them and on your own. They come from a variety of backgrounds with research interests extending a wide breadth of areas. Some students will have the opportunity to be a graduate assistant and work even closer with some of our faculty. Our curriculum will give you a strong background in American society, politics and culture, women’s history, and other historical topics. You will also have access to Bracken Library with its state-of-the-art technology and vast collection as well as some of the best research facilities such as the Center for Middletown Studies and the Helen B. and martin D. Schwartz Special Collections and Digital Complex. Primary research can be pursued at several readily accessible institutions in Indianapolis, Bloomington, Cincinnati, Columbus, and Chicago, or right here at Ball State with the Sir Norman Angell papers - which span his entire career as a political writer - and the Stoeckel Archives.
