Our students are prepared for careers in secondary school teaching by our dedicated faculty who have taught in public schools and published research on pedagogy. Students take content courses both in English and communications as well as courses focusing on the methods and strategies for the classroom. Students who successfully complete the program, which includes a semester of student teaching, are licensed to teach English/Language Arts and Communications in Indiana schools. The English/language arts teaching major is designed to prepare students for teaching effectively in middle and high schools. Students complete a core of courses in English and communication studies so as to meet performance standards for licensure. Each student selects a concentration area (English or communications studies) to provide greater depth of content knowledge in the student’s area of teaching interest. Students must also complete content methods courses that provide pedagogical knowledge and fulfill other professional requirements of the teacher education program. Students’ progress through the program is monitored, and students must meet prescribed levels of performance at various checkpoints as listed in the Unit Assessment System (UAS) in order to continue enrollment in teacher education.
