Course summary
How can chemistry help us store renewable energy, create more sustainable materials or understand disease at a molecular level? And what new possibilities emerge when traditional chemistry meets areas such as computation, materials science and chemical biology?
If you want to deepen your chemistry expertise while exploring where the subject could take you next, MSc Chemistry is for you.
At Southampton, you’ll develop master’s-level knowledge across analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry while choosing specialist study that reflects your interests. You can follow pathways in general chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic and materials chemistry, or physical chemistry.
Explore subjects connected to some of today’s major scientific and industrial challenges, including sustainable chemistry, advanced chemical biology, battery materials and technologies, medicinal chemistry, electrochemistry, spectroscopy, computational chemistry, and artificial intelligence and machine learning in chemistry.
This is chemistry you’ll put into practice. Alongside advanced theory, you’ll develop laboratory expertise and strengthen your scientific writing, communication and presentation skills. Workshops and practical work using laboratory instruments will help you build increasing independence as a scientist.
You’ll join a department where 97% of Chemistry research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021), connecting your learning with an active research environment.
Key features of this course
**Explore chemistry with real-world purpose.** Investigate areas linked to energy, sustainability, healthcare and diagnostics, from battery materials and electrochemistry to medicinal chemistry and functional materials.
**Build practical confidence.** Develop laboratory skills through practical classes, demonstrations and instrument-based workshops, learning to work with greater independence as the programme progresses.
**Take chemistry into new territory.** Depending on your choices, you can explore computational chemistry, AI and machine learning, spectroscopy, supramolecular chemistry, sustainable chemistry and advanced chemical biology.
**Develop as a scientific communicator.** Build your ability to engage with research literature, write scientifically and communicate complex chemistry through reports, seminars and presentations.
**Become part of the research process.** Complete an advanced research project involving around 600 hours of work, including 14 weeks of practical research. You’ll investigate a chemistry topic in depth and communicate your findings through your dissertation and viva.
Your future career
Chemistry can take you from the laboratory into industries and challenges that affect almost every part of modern life.
You’ll graduate with specialist chemical knowledge alongside skills in research, critical thinking, communication, teamwork, self-management and problem-solving.
Career paths directly connected with the course include analytical chemist, research scientist, medicinal chemist, energy engineer, forensic scientist, nanotechnologist, pharmacologist and biotechnologist. Southampton MSc Chemistry graduates have also progressed into roles including organic chemist, pharmaceutical analyst, drug safety associate, laboratory and process scientist, and energy and climate analyst.
Whether you move into industry or continue into further research, you’ll leave Southampton better equipped to investigate chemical problems, evaluate evidence and turn scientific ideas into practical progress.
Further information * This is a one-year, full-time MSc based at Highfield Campus. The taught programme takes place over the first two semesters, followed by the research element during the summer. * Applicants normally need a 2:1 degree in chemistry, or a 2:1 degree containing at least 30% chemistry content, excluding laboratory-based modules, with an average of 2:1 across their chemistry modules. Significant relevant professional experience may also be considered individually.”
