How do you put a value on uncertainty? And how can mathematics help organisations make better decisions about risks that could unfold decades into the future?
If you enjoy using quantitative thinking to solve complex financial problems, MSc Actuarial Science is for you.
Actuaries identify, analyse and manage risk, particularly where decisions have long-term financial consequences. Their expertise plays an important role across insurance, pensions, investment and the wider financial services industry.
At Southampton, you’ll develop specialist knowledge across actuarial mathematics, statistics and probability, economics, accounting and finance, and survival models and analysis. You’ll learn how to assess and manage risk using advanced actuarial methods, building the analytical skills to tackle complex problems with confidence.
This is an intensive, professional-level programme designed to prepare you for actuarial practice. Through lectures, tutorials, problem classes, computer workshops and case studies, you’ll put theory into action and develop skills in actuarial, statistical and financial modelling, analysis and communication.
Students who perform well in the taught component can gain exemptions from corresponding professional examinations of the internationally recognised Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA). The course is recognised by the IFoA, helping you build towards a professional actuarial career.
Southampton is ranked in the world top 100 for Statistics and Operational Research (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026).
Key features of this course
**Turn uncertainty into evidence.** Develop the mathematical and statistical skills to identify, quantify and analyse financial risk, helping you understand how decisions today can affect organisations far into the future.
**Build professional actuarial expertise.** Explore actuarial mathematics alongside probability, statistics, economics, accounting and finance, developing a broad understanding of the disciplines that underpin actuarial practice.
**Work towards professional exemptions.** Perform strongly in the taught component and you may gain exemptions from corresponding Institute and Faculty of Actuaries professional examinations, supporting your progress towards an actuarial career.
**Learn by solving problems.** Take part in lectures, tutorials, problem classes, computer workshops and case studies. You’ll develop your ability to model financial risk, analyse information and communicate complex findings clearly to different audiences.
**Take your thinking further.** During the final part of the MSc, you’ll undertake advanced independent work through actuarial case studies or an actuarial science project and dissertation, giving you the opportunity to investigate a complex problem in depth with academic supervision.
Your future career
Risk is everywhere, and organisations need people who can understand it, quantify it and make informed decisions about what happens next.
You’ll graduate with specialist actuarial knowledge alongside skills in mathematical and financial modelling, critical thinking, research, communication and problem-solving.
Actuarial expertise is particularly important across insurance, pensions, investment and financial services. Southampton graduates have progressed into roles including actuary, actuarial analyst, investment analyst, business analyst, data analyst and financial risk advisor.
Your quantitative skills can also open opportunities beyond traditional actuarial roles, across areas such as banking, accountancy, consultancy, data and research.
Further information
This is a one-year, full-time MSc based at Highfield Campus. The taught part of the course takes place across the first two semesters, followed by independent project work over the summer.
The programme is designed for students with a strong quantitative background. The course is flexible and can accommodate students both with and without previous actuarial education, with advice available to help you choose modules that meet your needs.
