What happens when electronic systems become smaller, faster and more connected? And how could your expertise help shape the technologies people rely on every day? If you want to deepen your electronic engineering knowledge while choosing where to specialise, MSc Electronic Engineering is for you.
At Southampton, you’ll explore advanced electronic technologies across four broad areas: microelectronics systems design, semiconductor nanotechnology, mobile communications and control systems. The broad structure of the programme gives you the flexibility to build expertise around your own interests and career ambitions. Depending on your module choices, your learning may include advanced lectures, practical activities, design work and individual or group projects, combining technical theory with opportunities to apply your knowledge.
The programme offers a wide choice of specialist modules. Depending on your choices, you can explore areas including micro and nanosystems, wireless networks, digital and analogue electronics, signal processing, robotics, control, quantum devices, hardware acceleration and secure embedded systems. Your studies culminate in an individual research project. You’ll work with a supervisor to investigate a specialist topic in depth, developing the research and problem-solving skills to take on complex electronic engineering challenges.
You’ll also be joining a department where 97% of Engineering research is rated world leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021).
Find your place in a field where ideas can become the technologies of tomorrow, and shape a master’s that takes your electronic engineering expertise in the direction you want to go.
Key features • Choose where to specialise. Select 7 modules from a wide range of options, allowing you to tailor the programme around the areas of electronic engineering that interest you most. • Build expertise across four broad areas. Explore microelectronics systems design, semiconductor nanotechnology, mobile communications and control systems, with the flexibility to combine modules from different areas. • Turn theory into practical engineering. Depending on your module choices, take part in practical activities, design work, problem-solving exercises and individual or group projects. • Investigate emerging technologies. Depending on your module choices, you could explore areas including robotics, machine learning for wireless communications, quantum devices, green electronics, hardware acceleration and secure hardware. • Take on your own research challenge. Complete an individual summer research project in a specialist area, working with a supervisor to agree your project brief and develop your investigation. • Prepare for professional engineering practice. Study research methods alongside ethical and legal issues connected with professional engineering, strengthening both your technical and research capabilities.
Your future career • Electronic engineering needs people who can understand complex systems, adapt to new technologies and turn technical ideas into practical solutions. • You’ll graduate with specialist engineering knowledge alongside skills in research, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, teamwork and adaptability. • Careers directly related to the course include electronic engineer, design and development engineer, systems engineer, telecommunications engineer, controls engineer and research engineer. Depending on your chosen specialism, graduates may also move into areas such as semiconductor engineering, embedded systems, robotics, software development and technology consultancy. • Whether you specialise in communications, microelectronics, semiconductor technologies, control or another emerging area, you’ll leave Southampton with advanced knowledge and practical research experience to take your next step in technology and engineering.
