Researchers estimate that food production will need to double to meet future food needs as the world population will exceed nine billion by 2050. There is an urgent need to train students in food and agriculture sciences to meet current and future challenges in this area.

Although number of courses (6 courses with total credit hour load 20) are taught by this department at undergraduate level that leads to the undergraduate programs Bachelor of Science in Food and Process Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering offered by Faculty of Engineering, the department distinctly offer Master of Science in Food Science and Nutrition program currently.

The Master of Science in food science and nutrition program aims to provide a cutting-edge educational and research opportunities   on the relationship between nutrition and health. This program also offers a comprehensive set of advanced topics including chemistry, microbiology, nutrition, health, food safety, modern food processing technology, evidence-based functional foods, and modern analytical science.  It is also directed toward maximizing the utilization of agricultural resources.

Students will learn from a team of motivated, supportive, and experienced nutrition and food science faculty members to prepare themselves as qualified graduates for food and nutrition-related careers in industry, government, and academia.

A minimum of 40 credits is required for the MS degree. This program is offered on-campus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Food production and safety, reliability, and health are constants in uncertain times. The food industry has always been vital to Bengali society and will be crucial to Bangladesh's economic recovery once it returns to normal. Food Science and Nutrition will remain stable programs with lifelong job security.
Food Science deals with the science and technology which is required to produce food fromagricultural commodities. Food Science ensures a safe food supply. Proper storage and processing prevent the transfer, or the production, of toxicants. Biotechnology creates new, innovative, useful foodstuffs by management of biological source materials. Sensory science allows consumer testing and product research. Quality control maintains production standards. Engineering develops new methods of processing, and perhaps even new ways to make familiar foods.Nutrition deals with the effects of foods on the people who consume them. It deals with nutrient contents and the effects on human health and development.Dietetics is the science concerned with the nutritional planning and preparation of foods. The curriculum includes normal and clinical nutrition, biological and social sciences, communication, and management.
Our majors require approximately the same amount of basic science as do the other science majors. The difference is that in Food Science and Nutrition every student gets an exposure to a wide range of scientific disciplines and has a chance to succeed in more areas. Food Science and Nutrition courses then ask students to apply principles learned in general science classes to the science of food processing, production, safety, and nutrition.
Graduates achieve position all over the Bangladesh and internationally. The food industry is worldwide. Careers ranging from Quality control to production to Microbiology to Sensory science to Management, etc., can be pursued throughout the nation.
Yes. Our students have no difficulty in obtaining employment throughout the food industry. Companies such as Nestle, Perfetti van melle, Transcom Beverages, Arla, PRAN RFL, AFBL, SFBL, Sajeeb Group, Partex Group, as well as Govt. (Bangladesh Food Safety authority as) and Non government agencies (CCDB, ESDO, Gram Bikash) have hired several of our graduates.
