The Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding under the Faculty of Agriculture offers courses in undergraduate level, offers degree programs of Masters and Doctoral degree. In undergraduate level, this department is offering 14 credit hours in four (4) years of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Honours) degree programs. These credit hours are run in five different courses viz. Fundamentals of Genetics, Cytogenetics and Cytology,Genetic Engineering, Molecular Plant Breeding and Plant Breeding. At post-graduate level, it offers 'Master of Science in Genetics and Plant Breeding' and 'Master of Science in Biotechnology' since 2005 and also offers Ph.D. degree.The research area focuses on major cereals like rice, wheat, barley, maize; vegetables like cherry tomato, capsicum; and fiber crops like jute, cotton, etc. Marker-assisted breeding research, plant regeneration through plant tissue culture and double haploid production are adopting in major crops.
