The Department of Life Sciences is the only Department of Life Sciences in the Third Category at National Central University. It established its Master's program in 1995, its Bachelor's program in 1999, and its Doctoral program in 2005. From its inception, in line with the university's development philosophy of "holistic environmental sustainability" and its educational goal of "enhancing human well-being," and based on the dual objectives of the "environmental protection" technology policy emphasized in the six-year national construction program, the department established its educational philosophy as "cultivating environmental and biotechnology talents for Taiwan," which serves as its teaching and development goal. Since the "Taiwan Bio-Economy Industry Development Plan" is based on existing biotechnology, its application and expansion into fields such as healthcare, industry, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural biotechnology are being promoted, the department has developed "Molecular Biomedicine" in recent years to align with the government's development strategy. Utilizing technologies such as biological big data analysis, the department strengthens the development between its two main strengths: "Environmental Biotechnology" and "Molecular Biomedicine," cultivating leadership talent in life sciences and responding to the current societal demand for foundational and professional talent in smart biotechnology and the biomedical industry, while also building a talent pool for post-graduate medical professionals. Since its establishment, the Department of Life Sciences has produced over 1,000 graduates, many of whom are leaders and key figures in the biotechnology field.
