Singapore is ideally positioned for that study. It is a natural language laboratory in which students and researchers can observe the causes, effects and functions of languages interacting with the social and cultural in complex and interesting ways. The Department numbers experts of various kinds among its faculty who bring different perspectives to bear on the phenomenon of language in social life. The department requires: Normally an NUS Honours degree (Second Class and above) or equivalent in a relevant discipline; or In exceptional circumstances and case by case, a Bachelors degree in a relevant discipline with at least two years of relevant work experience, subject to approval by the Board of Graduate Studies; and TOEFL (85 for the internet test or 580 for the paper test or 237 for the computer test) or IELTS,(6.0) for students who have not studied in a university where the medium of instruction is English.
