Graduate students in the research-based programmes—Master by Research and PhD—combine independent research with structured coursework. Master’s students are required to complete 4 modules within their first two semesters, while PhD students must complete 6 modules within their first three semesters. Students are expected to complete all coursework requirements before formally commencing their thesis research. Modules are selected from a broad range of offerings tailored to support each student’s research direction and address any gaps in knowledge. Up to 2 modules may be taken outside the Department to encourage interdisciplinary perspectives.

Students work closely with one or more faculty supervisors and benefit from an active research environment that includes seminars, reading groups, and workshops. Depending on the project, students may conduct fieldwork locally or abroad and receive support to present at international conferences. Opportunities for joint PhD programmes and collaborations with partner institutions further enrich the research experience.
