Through this course, students will develop a sound understanding of biomolecules and their analysis, including new and novel analytical methods, how these molecules function and how this affects the biological functioning of the whole organism. Students will also develop the research and analysis, presentation, communication, problem-solving and writing skills that are essential in all employment sectors. This course builds on students’ in-depth foundation in biochemistry, covering areas such as molecules, cells, physiology, disease, and both physical and organic chemistry. This enables students to focus on specialist areas including biophysical chemistry (describing biological macromolecules at atomic level) and understanding genomes and gene regulation. Students will conduct a further extended research project in the fourth year, either in the UK or abroad, as an industrial placement.
