Throughout this course, students will engage in the systematic study of language with a specific focus on English. Students will learn to analyse the structure of English, and the ways people use English to structure the world. By exploring the evolution of English from a set of dialects on an island to a global lingua franca, students will also examine ways that English continue to change today. Students will learn more generally about how language is formed, acquired, learned, and used. Assessment will normally take the form of 50% coursework and 50% examination. Applied Linguistics is relevant to a range of exciting careers including international business, management and consulting, public relations and human resources, diplomatic service, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and aid agencies, education – teaching and research, healthcare and medical companies, manufacturing industries, editing and publishing, public sector organisations and university international offices.
