Through this course, students will be equipped with the skills of analysis, argument, presentation, as well as first-hand experience of living abroad. The first year consists of one compulsory language module, designed to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of written and spoken French, including grammar. Students will also take the core module Story of Modern France, where they will examine primary texts from major periods and events in French history, literature and politics, to provide students with the foundation to study further aspects of French and francophone culture in the later stages of their degree. Students can choose two further modules in their first year, one of which may be from outside French. Students will continue to develop both of their language skills through the compulsory language modules in the second and final years. The modules cover culture, society, literature, politics, philosophy, film and history. Students will spend a year abroad, normally in year 3, either as a language assistant, studying at one of the partner institutions (including the Sorbonne, or universities in Grenoble, Caen, Brussels or Martinique in the French Caribbean), or undertaking an approved work placement.
