WSU offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program for registered nurses (RNs) who have associate degrees and want to continue their education to earn a BSN. The RN-BSN program is available at the college in Spokane, Tri-Cities, Vancouver, Yakima, Walla Walla, and online. The curriculum is highly flexible. The program can be completed entirely online or through a combination of online and classroom courses. Patients and providers all want better patient outcomes, and BSN-educated nurses are better equipped to meet the complex care needs of patients, coordinate that care among clinicians, and use new technologies to make care more effective and efficient. The RN-BSN degree completion program at WSU educates RNs wanting to advance their nursing knowledge, broaden their perspective of clinical practice, and enhance their leadership potential. Designed for nurses managing careers and families, you can complete the RN-BSN program at your own pace or in as little as 1 to 2 years. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends the number of nurses with a baccalaureate degree increase to 80 percent by 2020. This recommendation is based on the growing demand for highly competent, educated nurses and our complex, rapidly evolving healthcare system. BSN-educated nurses gain exposure to a wider range of nursing competencies and are better equipped to accommodate the changing needs of our diverse population. WSU awards 32 credits toward completion of your BSN degree for passing the NCLEX and maintaining an active RN license. The remaining senior year (30 credits) may be completed full-time or part-time. The program builds on the RN foundation and includes course work in assessment, research, informatics, leadership, management, ethics, mental health and community health. Advanced practicum experiences bridge course work and theory with clinical practice. As health care continues to shift outside the hospital to more primary and preventive care, the demand for nurses with baccalaureate and graduate degrees continues to expand. BSN-prepared nurses have a professional platform on which to build an expanded career path that includes health care administration, nursing education, and various clinical specialties in nursing. BSN graduates have many opportunities to serve and work as a Registered Nurse in a variety of health care settings.
