Mathematics majors are available to those planning to pursue careers in secondary and middle grades education, as well as to those whose preparation is being directed toward positions in business and industry, or toward further work in mathematics at the graduate level. In addition, several courses are offered to meet the demands for the mathematical training of students whose major educational objectives are not directly related to mathematics. Mathematics majors are assigned advisors from among the departmental faculty and are required to consult with these advisors before each registration period. Students who wish to declare 730 mathematics major are initially designated as 730P (Middle School Mathematics Prep). In order to be granted full admission into the 730 major, a student must satisfy the following requirements: Completion of MATH 117 and MATH 136, or MATH 136 and MATH 137, AND MATH 205, with a grade of C or better in each course. Have an overall GPA of at least 2.4 in all mathematics program courses completed prior to admission (MATH 136 and above). Submit a Change of Major form to change from 730P to a 730 major. A minimum of 32 hours of mathematics is required, along with a second major in Science and Mathematics Education (reference #774). No minor is required. All mathematics courses listed as prerequisites for other courses must have been completed with a grade of C or above.
