The B.S. Geography and Environmental Studies program requires a minimum of 52 semester hours of geography, plus supporting coursework. A minor or second major is NOT required. Students majoring in geography will learn the concepts and skills necessary to qualify for a variety of career opportunities that require a solid foundation in spatial thinking and analysis. Careers in Geography Students who complete the B.S. Geography and Environmental Studies degree at Western Kentucky University will be able to pursue careers that include the following: Environmental Management GIS, Planning, and Development Broadcast Meteorology Resource Sustainability Social and Cultural Analysis Diplomatic Service Business, Industry, and Tourism Students who enter graduate school and pursue a M.S. or Ph.D. in Geography will be able to pursue careers that include the following: University professor Geospatial research Sustainability and Environment Planning and GIS Consulting Required Concentration Courses: METR 121 Introductions to Meteorology METR 322 Global Climate Systems GEOG 455 Global Climate Change Elective Courses (Environment and Climate Area) (16 hours): Select from any appropriate GEOG, GISC, or METR 1xx-4xx course with your advisor (examples include 121, 226, 227, 322, , 414, 459, 471, 474, 487, etc.) to meet the 52 unduplicated hours required. At least 26 hours in the program must be at the upper division level.
