The University offers a bachelor of science (B.S.) in mathematics for students who wish to obtain licensure to teach in middle school, junior high, and high school. Students complete a core of mathematics courses in areas such as: Abstract algebra Calculus Discrete mathematics Geometry History of mathematics Linear algebra Number theory Probability and statistics In addition, students complete professional education courses to prepare them for teaching. Before graduating, all students work as student teachers and obtain experience in providing education to middle and high school students. In addition, many of our students provide help with mathematics for area students from middle and high schools, or work as math tutors in the Math and Writing Center at ISU. Advisors work with each student in the selection of courses prior to registration each semester. Each student's study benefits from use of the Center of Mathematics Education Resource Library housed on the second floor of University Hall. Careers Graduates are prepared to teach mathematics to students in middle and high schools throughout the country. The job placement rate for mathematics teaching graduates is excellent. There is a critical shortage of qualified math teachers in Indiana and throughout the United States.
