Speech-language pathology is a pre-professional program that provides the academic preparation and clinical experience needed to pursue a master's in speech-language pathology as well as employment as a paraprofessional. A master's degree in speech-language pathology is necessary to work as a speech-language pathologist in schools, hospitals, and other service provision settings. The Bayh College of Education offers many features that make our programs among the best in the nation. Students benefit from small classes taught by dedicated faculty. All engage in clinical supervisions and research and hold the Certificate of Clinical Competence issued by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. The program emphasizes clinical experiences, available at the University's Rowe Center for Communicative Disorders and off campus at selected schools. Students progress through the program in cohort groups that encourage shared learning experiences and lead to lasting friendships. The University's Rowe Center for Communication Disorders offers frequent opportunities to observe and practice classroom theories in a clinical setting. The center includes therapy rooms with two-way mirrors, sound monitoring systems and playback, and a speech-science laboratory. A new multi-million dollar Bayh College of Education facility features high-tech classrooms, a 475-seat auditorium, and comprehensive clinic. Careers Our graduates possess the academic preparation and clinical experience needed for admission to master's programs in speech-language pathology. A master's in speech-language pathology is required for most careers in the field of communication disorders. There is a critical need for speech-language pathologists in a variety of settings—and the demand is growing. Positions are available in schools, hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation facilities, extended care facilities, industry, government, private practice, colleges, and universities. Option II (academic) replaces the advanced clinic and school practicum with nine credits of professionally related academic coursework
