The University offers a bachelor of science (B.S.) in physical education for students who wish to obtain licensure to teach physical education in preschool through grade 12. The physical education major combine’s theoretical knowledge with practical application working with students in area schools. Beginning with their first year on campus, students are progressively guided through experiences that prepare them for successful careers in teaching. Students have numerous opportunities to apply concepts of teaching in high school, middle school, and elementary school settings, culminating with a semester-long student teaching experience. Coursework in the major includes skill proficiencies in areas such as the following: Fitness, net sports, team sports, and dance Human growth and motor development Social behavioral aspects of physical education Teaching theory and methods The department offers opportunities for on-site learning in education and professional areas of study, and for laboratory experience in pedagogy, physiology, biomechanics, and sports activity. Instruction is centered in our 230,000-square-foot Health and Human Services Building. The University is a leader in the state in using technology to enhance learning to teach. In the Instructional Analysis Laboratory, physical education teaching majors use specialized computer software programs to plan lessons and analyze their teaching performance. Our faculty members are nationally recognized for their expertise in teacher education. Relatively small class sizes make it possible for students to receive individual attention. Through our developmentally designed micro-teaching, early field experiences, and student teaching experiences, students get a real sense of what it means to be a teacher. Students may join the KRS Club (Organization for Students in Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport) and engage in social activities such as intramurals and bowling events. Service learning opportunities are available including activities working with children in physical activity settings and supporting local health-related organizations. In addition, numerous opportunities exist in Terre Haute and surrounding communities for students to volunteer with children and adults as coaches, instructors, and mentors. These include the Boys and Girls Club, community centers, sports centers, the Family Y, and the school corporation after-school programs. Careers Graduates of the Physical Education Teaching Program are qualified to take the state licensing exam for teaching physical education in preschool through grade 12. Our alumni have made (and continue to make) significant contributions in the areas of teaching, exercise science/fitness, and coaching.

Admission Requirements

Freshmen candidates applying directly from high school are expected to complete a rigorous college preparatory curriculum (Core 40 curriculum for Indiana residents) and maintain a competitive grade point of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale or the rigor of the high school curriculum, grades earned in academic subjects, and other evidence of academic potential or students completing GED diplomas are also given admission consideration based upon percentile rank, schooling completed, and additional standardized test scores. Other English Language Requirements: The required English language proficiency scores are TOEFL - 500, ELS - Level 112, IU - Level 6, Interlink - Level 5, MELAB - 69, The Language Company - Level 9, Spring International Language Center - Level 6, Purdue University Calumet - Level 4, Ball State University IEI - Level 6, and InterNexus - Advanced Level.
