The chemistry major is excellent preparation for students seeking careers in industry, graduate school, or professional school. Coursework offers students depth of knowledge in the five recognized sub-fields of chemistry—analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry. Students have opportunities to participate in research projects under the direct supervision and support of full-time faculty members. American Chemical Society-Certified Biochemistry Concentration: This program is designed for the student who wishes to pursue an advanced degree or a career as a professional chemist in the area of biochemistry and the biological sciences. The Department of Chemistry and Physics at Indiana State assures students the best of both worlds—hands-on use of state-of-the-art instrumentation of the type found at major research universities and the closeness between students and faculty that characterizes smaller liberal arts colleges. Students participate in real-world applications of chemistry through departmental seminars by recent graduates and talks by industrial scientists and managers. The highlight of the program is the high degree of participation by undergraduates in faculty-mentored research. A wide range of research opportunities is available including biochemistry, bioinformatics, computational chemistry, cosmochemistry, environmental chemistry, inorganic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, natural products chemistry, organic synthesis and physical chemistry. As part of the research experience, students have the opportunity to present their results at regional and national meetings. Full-time, ten-week paid summer research fellowships are available within the department, and a few students gain experience through internships with local companies. Careers Chemistry graduates secure positions as chemists, laboratory managers, and research scientists in the chemical sciences industry. Many go on to graduate school in chemistry or related fields or seek professional degrees in medical, dental, chiropractic, pharmaceutical, or veterinary schools. Over the past five years, over 80 percent of the University's chemistry majors who applied to medical school were admitted. The department boasts an excellent placement record for industrial positions as well.
