The University offers a bachelor of science (B.S.) degree in civil engineering technology that prepares students for careers in the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the built environment and global infrastructure. Coursework includes a core that combines laboratory experiences with courses in mechanical and civil engineering technology, hydrology, and geographic information systems applications. In addition, students complete courses in mathematics and science, and select electives from areas such as construction safety, quality control and assurance, research and development of technology, and workplace law. Students also complete the University's Foundational Studies Program, which provides the knowledge students need in critical thinking, leadership, and interpersonal and communication skills. The department offers small class sizes, which allow for individual attention. Coursework is centered in the University's John T. Myers Technology Center, which houses more than 20 state-of-the-art laboratories filled with up-to-date equipment and supplies. A number of activities and organizations are available nationwide that enable students to interact with other students and professionals in the industry. These include American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), and Epsilon Pi Tau (the international honorary for professions in technology). Special Note: The University has a transfer agreement with Ivy Tech Community College that allows for seamless transfer of Ivy Tech's associate of science (A.S.) in design technology to ISU's bachelor of science (B.S.) in civil engineering technology. This agreement enables Ivy Tech students to study for two years at Ivy Tech then finish their final two years of coursework for their bachelor's at ISU. Selected courses in the program are available via online learning. Careers The Civil Engineering Technology Program prepares students with the technical and managerial skills necessary to enter careers in the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the built environment and global infrastructure. Graduates are able to analyze and design systems, specify project methods and materials, perform cost estimates and analyses, and manage technical activities in support of civil projects.
