The University offers a bachelor of science (B.S.) in business education for students who wish to obtain licensure to teach in middle school, junior high, and high school. The business education major includes the core of business courses required of all business majors. Students gain teaching skills through classroom and field experiences in the Bayh College of Education and the Business Education, Information, and Technology Program—and through their required student teaching experience. Required courses for the major include: Information and technology in organizations Document planning and design Spreadsheet and database applications Managing information resources and staff Teaching methodology Coursework emphasizes hands-on practice and teamwork. Students have ample opportunities to explore their own creativity in the classroom teaching environment and to work with new technologies in a collaborative learning environment. Real teaching experiences begin as early as the freshman year and culminate in the senior year with an eight-week student teaching experience. Students are encouraged to become active in student organizations on campus. Business Professionals of America at the collegiate level provides local, state, and national leadership, professional learning, and networking opportunities. The Pi Omega Pi National Business Teacher Education Honor Society affords its members ample leadership opportunities, the chance to socialize with other business students and faculty, and the opportunity to present at national conferences throughout the country. Careers The demand for well-prepared public educators is increasing as Baby Boom generation teachers retire. Indiana State's business education major meets licensure requirements for teaching business courses in Indiana’s junior high/middle schools and high schools. Business teachers are also in demand by businesses and other organizations seeking individuals who are technologically literate and capable of training new employees in business communication skills and information processing applications. And because business education majors complete the same core requirements as all other Scott College of Business majors, they are well suited for a variety of administrative and information systems positions in business and industry.
