The Science Education Program prepares students for licensure to teach in middle school, junior high, and high school. The program leads to teaching licensure in one or more of the following areas: biology, chemistry, earth space science, physics, or middle school science. Science Education is an interdisciplinary program. The program contains three components: A science core A concentration in earth space science or middle school science or second major in biology, chemistry or physics Professional education courses Science education students receive extensive experience teaching in classroom settings, and participate in practical experiences at the middle school and high school levels. Students in the program have multiple opportunities to participate in a range of volunteer or internship experiences. Some of these include participating as an undergraduate research assistant, a student leader of outreach projects such as the Bat Festival, a mentor in the ISU Summer Science Camp, or a science fair judge. Students may become members of the Indiana Student Education Association, a social and professional organization for tomorrow’s teachers. Together with the support of other local, state, and national chapters, the organization provides opportunities for professional development as an outstanding teacher. Careers There is a critical need for science teachers in middle and high schools—both in Indiana and throughout the United States. The job placement rate for science education graduates is excellent. In addition to finding employment as teachers, our graduates may find jobs as informal educators in science centers, zoos, aquariums, museums, or cooperative extension centers. Further graduate work in the field of education may open the door to careers in school administration or science curriculum design.
