Addressing the challenges of agri-food production is a global task and requires the deployment of the best scientific and technological capabilities, while in Chile there is consensus that science and technological innovation is one of the main pillars of development and competitiveness of the country. The Doctorate in Agri-Food and Environmental Sciences of the Universidad de La Frontera orients its work so that its graduates can work in environments characterised by research, productive development and technological innovation, joining the few programmes of this type in the country, thus opening a training space for the central-southern area of the country, where one of its focuses is the training of advanced human capital for the public and private sector. This programme seeks to provide a quality alternative for training at doctoral level, promoting comprehensive and multidisciplinary training applicable in the academic and productive spheres. This, by means of a semi-flexible curriculum (given the inclusion of elective subjects) and the participation of academics from different disciplines and with different professional backgrounds. It also offers a strong orientation towards training science-based professionals who are able to offer innovative solutions in private companies and the public sector. To this end, students will be strongly linked to real problems through curricular activities by means of compulsory courses (e.g. Business and Innovation Management), elective courses, bibliographic seminar and the degree thesis. This linkage will be supported through the University's interdisciplinary institutes (Agroindustry Institute, Environment Institute, Institute of Local and Regional Development, iDEA UFRO Institute), which generate and transfer scientific and technological knowledge to companies and the public sector. In turn, this will be reinforced with the support of strategic partners with which the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Environment currently maintains strong technology transfer activity, mainly companies and public institutions in the region and the country.
