Is a postgraduate academic programme dependent on the Vice-Rectory for Research and Postgraduate Studies of the Universidad de La Frontera that is aligned with the objectives of the Performance Agreement in Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, for which it promotes the academic work of researchers who are part of the programme, promotes the associative work with the Scientific and Technological Nucleus in Social Sciences and Humanities and with the Faculty of Education, Social Sciences and Humanities of the University, in turn, directs the available resources that are part of the doctoral programme in order to strengthen the academic training of students, and promotes a link with the environment through the development of academic activities related to university work related to doctoral training in social sciences. In addition, the Doctorate in Social Sciences contributes to the fulfilment of the commitment made by the Universidad de La Frontera regarding the quality of the education of its students, respect for the individual, cultural diversity and the promotion of a more just and democratic society.

The Doctorate is also a postgraduate training instance that is based on the need to encourage reflection, dialogue and scientific research on a set of social phenomena that concern us today. Therefore, the Universidad de La Frontera through the Doctorate in Social Sciences seeks to play a relevant role in the context of the knowledge society, not only because every doctoral programme is a source of academically relevant and socially significant knowledge, but also for its contribution to define and guide the various critical views that should be made about the social, political, economic and cultural problems that are manifested in our region and the country. In this sense, the responsibility of the academic community that forms part of the Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences is not limited to the performance of a function of production and dissemination of specialised knowledge but, at the same time, involves ethical and political commitments in the development of social research on a set of problems that are generated in contemporary societies.

Therefore, the Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences at the Universidad de La Frontera is constituted as an academic space that seeks to contribute to the construction and promotion of research that addresses problems of the regional, national and international environment, primarily related to issues of high influence in today's world, such as: State transformations, development and citizenship; the economy and globalisation, socio-spatial mobility processes and inter-ethnic and international relations; the information society, communication and social processes; cultures, narratives and social representations; poverty and territorial inequalities; environmental risks and problems, construction of subjectivities, among others.
