The Ph.D. degree is a research-oriented degree. Beyond the course work requirements, the Ph.D. requires successful completion and defense of a dissertation representing original research in Hispanic literatures or linguistics. The areas in which recent dissertations have been completed in our program include contemporary Iberian studies, early modern Spanish literature, Spanish-American narrative, Spanish-American essay, formal Spanish syntax, Spanish phonology and sociophonetics, and second language acquisition. Course work requirements A minimum of 27 s.h. (9 courses) beyond the M.A., for a total of 19 courses beyond the B.A. The following minimum distribution must be completed, some of which can be met by courses from the M.A. In the Department of Linguistics: LING 3005 Articulator and Acoustic Phonetics LING 5010 Introduction to Syntax LING 5020 Introduction to Phonology LING 6010 Syntactic Theory In the Department of Spanish & Portuguese: SPAN 6110 Spanish Phonology SPAN 6120 Spanish Syntax SPAN 6150 Topics in Spanish Language Acquisition SPAN 6190 Topics in Comparative Romance Linguistics 1 seminar in Hispanic linguistics
