The Global Health Studies Program is a unique interdisciplinary and experiential program of study for UI students that build upon the humanities, social sciences, and health sciences to help students better understand the underlying forces, such as technology, economics, politics, religion, law, gender and sexuality, history, and culture that shape health and disease. The Bachelor of Arts with a major in global health studies requires a minimum of 120 s.h., including at least 37 s.h. of course work for the major. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences General Education Program provides students with a broad foundation of knowledge and a focused practice of transferable skills necessary for a lifetime of learning. Career Advancement The Global Health Studies Program engages students and faculty in real-world health problems and challenges students to embark on global health careers which place a priority on improving health and achieving equity in health for people worldwide. Graduates find opportunities in a range of global health job sectors such as: in-country field consultants; disaster relief organizations; immigrant/refugee health organizations; research and academic institutions; international agencies; other nongovernmental agencies (NGOs); lending agencies that do work in developing countries; multilateral agencies (such as the World Health Organization); and governmental agencies (United States Agency for International Development, Center for Disease Control, in-country ministries of health, etc.). Global health graduates also have pursued graduate and professional programs in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, public health, law, nonprofit management, urban and regional planning, public administration, and international development.
