Master of Teaching (Primary)

This is a graduate entry degree. For entry into this course applicants must hold a prior bachelor's award and have an appropriate academic background in the Key Learning Areas (KLAs) as determined by NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), previously NSW Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES).

You must upload a verified copy of the transcript and award for your completed undergraduate degree.

Content requirements
Your undergraduate (or any postgraduate) degree(s) must contain at least one year of full-time study in one Key Learning Area, or a combination of KLAs from the primary school curriculum. One year of study is defined as eight semester-long units of undergraduate study. This can be in one KLA, such as Mathematics, or a combination of KLAs, such as a combination of units across English, Human Society and its Environment, and Creative Arts. For entry into a primary graduate-entry initial teacher education program, Charles Sturt University will assess to what extent the studies in your undergraduate degree meet the NESA content requirements. NESA does not provide this assessment. Further information about the content required for specific teaching areas in New South Wales is available on the NESA website.

Charles Sturt takes a holistic approach to understand each applicants' potential for academic success. Each student is assessed on a range of factors including academic readiness, previous study, work and life experience, motivation to succeed, and an awareness of the demands of tertiary study.

Applicants for the Master of Teaching (Primary) must meet the following admission requirements:

A completed Bachelor’s Degree (or AQF equivalent) and successful completion of acceptable undergraduate and or/postgraduate study that includes the equivalent of one year (1.0 Equivalent Full Time Study Load - EFTSL) usually equating to eight subjects that identify with the NESA curriculum for K-6. Of the eight subjects, four need to be within one of the seven primary teaching areas: English, Mathematics, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS/HSIE), Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE), Arts, Science and Technology or Languages. This will form the basis for admission into a primary teaching area program.

In addition, Science and Technology and Languages primary teaching areas are also required to have completed an approved curriculum method subject in the relevant primary teaching area.

Entry to the Master of Teaching (Primary) through the Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) degree; this option is offered to those whose prior studies do not meet the NESA requirements or a primary teaching area and/or the equivalent of one year (1.0 Equivalent Full Time Study Load - EFTSL) that identify with the NESA curriculum for K-6 as specified above, and who need to do additional subjects.  On the completion of the first 4 subjects (equivalent to one session of full time study) for the Bachelor of Teaching (Primary), students can apply to enter the Master of Teaching Primary; to be eligible, students must have attained a Grade Point Average of 4 in their undergraduate or postgraduate degree or first 4 subjects (equivalent to one session of full time study) for the Bachelor of Teaching (Primary).

This is a graduate-entry degree. For entry into this course, you must hold a prior bachelor's degree and have an appropriate academic background as determined by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), previously the NSW Board of Studies, Teaching and Education Standards (BOSTES). Your degree must have six appropriate discipline subjects as the basis of your curriculum method major.

There are two entry points to the Master of Teaching (Primary):

1. Admission to the Master of Teaching (Primary) Graduate Entry will be on the basis of successful completion of an acceptable undergraduate and/or postgraduate study that includes the equivalent of one of a year (1.0) Equivalent Full-Time Study Load - EFTSL) of discipline study in a NSW primary K-6 curriculum. In most programs, this equates to eight units, four of which need to be within one of the following primary teaching areas: English, Mathematics, Humanities and Social Science (HASS/HSIE), Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) or Arts. In addition to these requirements, admission into the primary teaching areas Science and Technology or Languages requires one relevant curriculum method subject in Science and Technology or Languages, respectively. The above assessment will form the basis for admission into a primary teaching area to comply with the NESA primary teaching area accreditation guidelines in these two areas.

You must have attained a Grade Point Average of 4 or above in your undergraduate or postgraduate studies.

You must upload a verified copy of the transcript and your completed undergraduate and post graduate degree/s with your application. 

2. Entry to the Master of Teaching (Primary) through the Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) is possible on the completion of the first 4 subjects (equivalent to one session of full time study) for the Bachelor of Teaching (Primary), students can apply to enter the Master of Teaching Primary; to be eligible, students must have attained a Grade Point Average of 4 in their undergraduate or postgraduate degree or first 4 subjects (equivalent to one session of full time study) for the Bachelor of Teaching (Primary).

Content requirements

Your undergraduate (or any postgraduate) degree(s) must contain four subjects in one of the primary teaching area curriculum areas of English, Mathematics, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS/HSIE), Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE), or Arts with the primary teaching area of Science and Technology and Languages also requiring a relevant curriculum method subject.

Admission into the each program for each of the following primary teaching areas is detailed below:
 

English, Mathematics, PDHPE, Arts and HASS/HSIE Primary Teaching Area
A student’s ‘primary teaching area’ in one of the areas: English, Mathematics, PDHPE, Arts and HASS/HSIE is assessed on entry to the course and is based on having completed at least four discipline area subjects in one of the seven curriculum areas prior to entry.  A further four subjects in prior discipline study is also required but can be in any curriculum learning areas.

Science & Technology
A student’s eligibility for the Science & Technology ‘primary teaching area’ is assessed on entry to the course and is based on having completed at least four discipline area subjects in this curriculum learning area prior to entry plus a curriculum method subject in Science or Technology.  A further four subjects in prior discipline study is also required but can be in any curriculum learning area.Students who do not fully meet these requirements may be offered a place in the Bachelor of Teaching Primary course if the requirements for this course are met in which up to two additional subjects can be completed before applying for the Master of Teaching.

Languages
A student’s eligibility for the Language ‘primary teaching area’ is assessed on entry to the course and is based on having completed at least four subjects of post-introductory level language discipline study or approved equivalent recognition, in one language prior to entry plus a curriculum method subject in Languages. A further four subjects in prior discipline study is also required but can be in any curriculum learning area.

NESA details the subject content knowledge requirements for entry to graduate teaching programs.Students who do not fully meet these requirements may be offered a place in the Bachelor of Teaching Primary course if the requirements for this course are met in which up to two additional subjects can be completed before applying for the Master of Teaching.
Entry requirements are based on the NESA requirements for entry to teacher education courses. You can find an overview of these requirements on the NESA website.

If, in CSU's opinion, you have met the NESA requirements, you are then regarded as eligible for consideration for the course. Entry is then based on competitiveness of applicants.
English Language Proficiency Standard English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements. Refer to http://futurestudents.csu.edu.au/apply/english-language for the specific requirements. This will apply to both domestic and international applicants. Offer may be conditional on ELP but applicants will be required to provide evidence of meeting these requirements before the start of studies. * Completing a TOEFL IBT with an overall score of 102 (with a score of 23 or above in reading and writing, and a score of no less than 27 for speaking and listening). Testing results must be within two years from the date of your application for admissions. OR International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) with a score of Level 4 in all four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing, undertaken at approved testing sites where the assessment is teacher focused. Testing results must be within two years from the date of your application for admissions. OR * Were born in one Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, USA, United Kingdom or South Africa and have completed at least one qualification in one of  those countries and the language in which the qualification was undertaken was  English. OR * If you were not born in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, USA, United Kingdom or South Africa but have completed senior secondary study or at  least a diploma in one of these countries and the  language in which the qualification was undertaken was English.
