Admission Requirements
Charles Sturt takes a holistic approach to understand each applicants' potential for academic success. Each student is assessed on a range of factors including academic readiness, previous study, work and life experience, motivation to succeed, and an awareness of the demands of tertiary study.
Applicants for the Master of Teaching (Secondary) must meet the following admission requirements. A completed Bachelor’s Degree (or AFQ equivalent) and successful completion of acceptable undergraduate and or/postgraduate study that includes the equivalent of three-quarters of a year of discipline study relating to the applicant’s intended teaching area, usually comprising sequential discipline study taken over three years (0.75 Equivalent Full Time Study Load - EFTSL). Applicants must also have a GPA (Grade Point Average) of 4.0 (Pass) in their prior undergradaute studies.
Applicants who are no more than two subjects short of the NESA requirements for discipline content subjects, or who lack the required GPA of 4.0, will be offered a place in the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) where they can complete the required subejcts /demonstrate their capacity to achieve a GPA of 4.0.
On the completion of the first 4 subjects (equivalent to one session of full time study) for the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) and/or any required additional disipline subjects to support their teaching area, students can apply to enter the Master of Teaching Secondary; to be eligible, students must have attained a Grade Point Average of 4 in their undergraduate or postgraduate degree or first 4 subjects (equivalent to one session of full time study) for the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary).
English Language Proficiency Entry Requirements for Teacher Education Preparation Programs
All applicants who do not meet the Standard CSU English Language Proficiency Requirements must demonstrate proficiency by completing an Academic IELTS (or equivalent) with an overall score of 7.5 (with no score below 7 in reading and writing, and a score of no less than 8 in speaking and listening) - see CSU Concordance Tables for accepted equivalent measures.
NOTE: Please refer to relevant National or State employing bodies for their English language proficiency requirements when seeking employment.
This is a graduate-entry degree. For entry into this course, you must hold a prior bachelor's degree and have an appropriate academic background as determined by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), previously the NSW Board of Studies, Teaching and Education Standards (BOSTES). Your degree must have six appropriate discipline subjects as the basis of your curriculum method major.
There are two entry points to the Master of Teaching (Secondary):
- Admission to the Master of Teaching (Secondary) Graduate Entry will be on the basis of successful completion of an acceptable undergraduate degree that includes the equivalent of three-quarters of a year (0.75 Equivalent Full-Time Study Load – EFTSL) of discipline study, usually comprising sequential discipline study taken over three years. In most programs, this equates to six units, with no more than two units at first year level and no fewer units than two units at third year level. You must have attained a Grade Point Average of 4 or above in your undergraduate studies.
You must upload a verified copy of the transcript and your completed undergraduate degree with your application. - Entry to the Master of Teaching (Secondary) through the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) is possible on the completion of the first scheduled year of study (8 subjects) for the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary). You must have attained a Grade Point Average of 4 in your undergraduate degree or in your first year of study (8 subjects) for the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary).
Content requirements
Your undergraduate (or any postgraduate) degree(s) must contain a major in the first subject you intend to teach and a minor in any additional subjects you would like to teach.
A major is defined as six sequential semester-long units of undergraduate study. Two subjects must be at level one, two subjects at level two and three subjects at level three.
A minor is defined as four semester-long units of undergraduate study. At least two of these units must be at level 2 (year 2) or above.
You should note that some secondary school subjects have very specific requirements. For example, to be a science teacher you need to have studied chemistry or physics at university level, and to be a PDHPE teacher you need to have studied both practical sports and contemporary adolescent health issues at university level.

Entry requirements are based on the NESA requirements for entry to teacher education courses. You can find an overview of these requirements on the NESA website.
Charles Sturt University will assess to what extent the studies in your undergraduate degree meet the NESA content requirements for teaching particular secondary school subjects. NESA does not provide this assessment. If you have a previous written prescription from NESA or the relevant employing authority in another state, it is requested that you include a copy with your application.
Applicants with more than two undergraduate level subjects to complete will have their application deemed ineligible. Applicants are encouraged to complete the necessary undergraduate requirements and then reapply.
If, in Charles Sturt University's opinion, you have met the NESA requirements, you are then regarded as eligible for consideration for the course. Entry is then based on competitiveness of applicants.
