The BA in foreign languages with teacher licensure is a K-12 licensure program and is comprised of 40 semester hours of general education, professional education core courses as specified below and including ELE 2320 and 32 semester hours in French, German or Spanish including 3 semester hours of Cadet Teaching (FLF/FLG/FLS 3401). The teacher licensure program is nationally recognized by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). As such it meets all national standards for the preparation of foreign language teachers established by CAEP as well as the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). A major in foreign languages (with a concentration in French, German or Spanish) consists of one of the following four course selections. Course selections vary in two primary ways: the number of semester hours (3-9 semester hours) of FLE or equivalent courses required; the number of semester hours of a second foreign language (8-16 semester hours). Choice of course selection should be made according to the individual majors? interests in consultation with their advisor. As a teacher candidate in this course, students have the opportunity to work with a faculty member and a team of other teacher licensure candidates to design a program to introduce French, German or Spanish to young learners. The culmination of this experience is to go into an area elementary school on a weekly basis for six weeks to deliver the program which have been designed. A strong background in foreign language studies can lead to varied, interesting and lucrative career opportunities in fields such as business, government or education. A major in foreign languages can be a stepping stone to language-centered jobs such as interpreter, translator or teacher, as well as a complement for jobs in which foreign language skills are valuable. Knowing a language other than English is also an asset for a wide range of jobs that do not require any specific major. Foreign language-related careers are interesting and varied, and include the following: foreign language teaching, translation/interpretation, business jobs (bilingual assistant or international sales representative, for example.), tourism (hotel chains, airlines, and travel agencies.), social work, communications personnel (radio/television, journalism, and advertising.), library sciences, and publishing, health care and government jobs.
