Journalism majors should have a strong in interest in news, writing and storytelling. The journalism major consists of 69-70 hours in three required areas and a fourth voluntary area of co-curricular activities. Backed by a strong foundation in law and ethics, students learn to report news across a variety of platforms, from print, to the web, to broadcast, and they learn how to work as public relations practitioners. The department of journalism is committed to excellence in teaching, in professional and creative activity, and in service to journalism and public relations. The department will promote excellence in learning by encouraging students to become skillful communicators, critical thinkers, knowledgeable media consumers and users, and ethical leaders capable of understanding and protecting the democratic process. An enriched professional environment will encourage students to gain the experience and skills essential to life-long learning. The writing and reporting concentration is designed to provide students with the knowledge and values necessary to understand the roles and functions of writers and reporters in journalistic media and to provide them with the skills and practice necessary to excel in such roles.
