The B.A. in mathematics, has traditionally prepared students for advanced degrees, both in mathematics and in other fields such as medicine, law, business, and science. Students who are preparing for careers in industry or government often choose this major. They combine selected mathematics courses with courses in business, data processing, economics, physics, or chemistry, for example to provide the background for a wide range of careers. The mathematics and computer science major comprises a required upper-division writing intensive course and the following: mathematics and computer science core (62 hours); MAT 1441G - calculus and analytic geometry I; MAT 2170 - computer science I; MAT 2345 - elements of discrete mathematics; MAT 2442 - calculus and analytic geometry II; MAT 2443 - calculus and analytic geometry III; MAT 2550 - introduction to linear algebra; MAT 2670 - computer science II; MAT 3570 - numerical analysis; MAT 3670 - principles of computer systems; MAT 3701 - probability and statistics I; MAT 3702 - probability and statistics II; MAT 3770 - combinatorial computing; MAT 3870 - data structures; MAT - internship in mathematics and computer science I or MAT ; MAT 4880 - design and analysis of algorithms; MAT 4970 - principles of operating systems.

Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale is required. Other English language requirements: A score of 500 in paper based of the TOEFL examination; A minimum score of at least 69 on the English Proficiency Test administered by the English Language Institute of the University of Michigan (MELAB).
