The athletic program is for students who are interested in prevention, care, and evaluation of athletic injuries. The program provides students interested in the prevention, care, and evaluation of athletic injuries the necessary course work and clinical experience to qualify to sit for the examination leading to certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification. Certified athletic trainers are health care professionals who specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. As part of a complete health care team, the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other health care professionals, athletics administrators, coaches and parents. The coursework and clinical experiences required to earn this degree will qualify students to sit for their Board certification. Students will take classes in biology, nutrition, and health studies in addition to kinesiology classes such as basic care and prevention of athletic injuries, structural kinesiology, injury recognition, therapeutic exercise, therapeutic modalities, biomechanics, and several clinical courses. Certified athletic trainers can be found in schools, on the sidelines of professional sports, in hospitals and clinics, and in the industrial setting as the profession that began with college sports expands to guard the safety of people involved in physical activity.
