Economics is a social science focusing on the study of decision-making under scarcity, and the factors that influence wealth. Economics involves financial topics and broader historical, sociological and cultural topics ranging from the individual (microeconomics) to governments, industries and central banking (macroeconomics). Students will gain a marketable edge through field and speciality courses focused on labour, natural resources and industrial organisation. Mathematics is a large component of many of Lakehead’s Economics courses. A student may enter the Honours BA program in economics after the first year, providing a 70% average has been attained in Economics 1100 and one other full course acceptable to the Chair of the Department. An overall 70% average in at least four courses in economics taken in the first two years, and an overall 70% average in the economics courses taken in each of the succeeding years, is required by the department.
