Mechanical engineers apply the fundamental principles of motion (mechanics) and energy (thermo sciences) to serve the needs of people through the creative problem-solving process known as engineering design. These principles are represented in the subjects of solid and fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, mechanical systems, and material science. Practicing mechanical engineers work in many application areas, which include such industries as automotive, chemical, energy, consumer product, aerospace, computer and electronic, and biomedical. The student must complete a total of 30 credits for the degree under either Plan A (with thesis) or Plan B (without thesis).
