The B.Sc. in Optometry is a 4-year undergraduate program (3 years of academics + 1 year of clinical internship) designed to train primary eye care practitioners. The course combines theoretical knowledge of visual science with extensive clinical training in the diagnosis and management of refractive errors and ocular diseases.

Course Overview

  • Focus: The curriculum covers Ocular Anatomy, Physiology, geometric and physical optics, and the pharmacology of eye medications.

  • Core Skills: Students become proficient in Refraction (measuring vision for glasses), Contact Lens fitting, Low Vision Aids, and the detection of eye diseases like Cataract, Glaucoma, and Diabetic Retinopathy.

Training Infrastructure

Optometry students receive hands-on training in the Department of Ophthalmology, utilizing some of the most advanced diagnostic equipment in the region:

  • Advanced Diagnostics: Training in performing and interpreting tests using the Humphrey Field Analyzer (for Glaucoma), Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) (for Retina), and Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA) .

  • Specialty Clinics: Students rotate through dedicated clinics for Glaucoma, Retina, Squint, and Oculoplasty, gaining exposure to complex cases beyond simple vision testing.

  • Eye Bank: Exposure to the Eye Bank and Specular Microscopy, understanding the protocols for corneal donation and preservation.

  • Community Ophthalmology: Active participation in Health Camps and the National Blindness Control Programme, where students screen patients in rural areas, developing independence and confidence in diagnosis.

Clinical Internship

The final year involves a mandatory rotating internship within Chhatrapati Shivaji Subharti Hospital .

  • Responsibilities: Interns work alongside ophthalmologists in the crowded OPDs, independently performing refractions, tonometry (eye pressure check), and assisting in pre-operative workups for Phacoemulsification and Laser surgeries.

Career Scope

Graduates are qualified to work as:

  • Consultant Optometrists in hospitals or private clinics.

  • Vision Care Specialists in multinational optical chains.

  • Clinical Researchers in ophthalmic institutes.
