Study Level
Undergraduate
Study Mode
On Campus
This is a 3.5 to 4-year undergraduate program (including a mandatory internship) designed to create specialized professionals who are experts in the administration and monitoring of anesthesia. Unlike a standard OTT course which covers general surgery assistance, this Honors track places a heavier emphasis on the Anesthesia Workstation, patient life support, and critical care.
Core Focus Areas
Anesthesia Technology: In-depth mastery of modern anesthesia workstations (Boyle's apparatus, closed circuits), vaporizers, and gas delivery systems.
Pharmacology of Anesthetics: Detailed study of induction agents, muscle relaxants, inhalational gases, and emergency drugs used during surgery.
Critical Care & Monitoring: Training in the setup and interpretation of multipara monitors (ECG, SPO2, IBP, EtCO2) and managing ventilators in the ICU.
Advanced Airway Management: Assisting in difficult intubations using Video Laryngoscopes and Fiberoptic Bronchoscopes.
Training Infrastructure
The program leverages the massive infrastructure of the Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care :
20 Operation Theatres: Students rotate through 13 Major and 7 Minor OTs, gaining experience in diverse specialties like Neurosurgery, Cardiac Surgery, and Trauma.
Specialized ICUs: Hands-on training in the 80-bed Critical Care Complex, including Surgical (SICU), Medical (MICU), and Neonatal (NICU) units, handling ventilators and BiPAP machines.
Simulation Learning: Access to the CPR and Skill Lab for practicing Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) protocols on mannequins before handling real patients.
Pain Management: Exposure to the Pain Clinic, learning about nerve blocks, epidural setups, and ozone therapy assistance.
Key Responsibilities Taught
Pre-operative: Checking the anesthesia machine (cockpit drill), preparing drug trolleys, and assessing patient vitals.
Intra-operative: Assisting the Anesthesiologist with intubation, monitoring depth of anesthesia, and managing fluid replacement.
Post-operative: Managing patient recovery in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and extubation assistance.
Career Scope
Graduates with this Honors specialization are highly sought after as:
Anesthesia Technologists in super-specialty hospitals.
ICU/Critical Care Technicians.
Transplant Team Members (Liver/Kidney/Heart) where advanced monitoring is crucial.
