The  Department of Biology  was established on the foundation of the college on 1988, the department received first student's batch on academic year (1989-1990). The first batch of graduates was on (1992-1993). Most outstanding graduates were admitted to postgraduate studies. The department aims at preparing specialized staff in Biology and Microbiology to work in different state ministries in sectors of Education, Teaching, Health, Industry and Agriculture, etc.

The department undergraduates students are (350) and postgraduate students are (14). Through the 4 year study, the students study all the basic specializations of biology and some supportive sciences. The total units studied on graduation are (175).

The department teaching languages are Arabic and English. The department grants the Bachelor, Master and doctorate degrees of biology.

The department adopts unified absence system of Iraqi universities. The maximum absence rate is 10% of the total number of study hours. The section grade system is percentage and the minimum level of passing Bachelor degree is 50% and the postgraduate studies level is 60% with a graduation average of 70%.
