Masters

The First Professional Master of Landscape Architecture program is a 3.5 year course of study (always beginning in May) for those entering from a discipline other than landscape architecture. Prior educational experience from any field is accepted for the First Professional Master of Landscape Architecture, resulting in a student body with a wide range of education and life experiences that enrich learning for all. The first year is “leveling”, in which students without design backgrounds begin in the summer semester to establish core skills and knowledge in graphics, design, computer applications, site analysis, etc. The next two semesters continue to build the core. Experience and education in planning, allied design fields, and other areas may allow the student to waive or exempt specific classes in the first three leveling semesters. At the end of this time, students are equipped to take on graduate level coursework. The first two years expose students to the breadth of landscape architecture. In the third and final year, students explore a depth of landscape architecture of their choosing, through thesis / thesis project and electives. There is no difference in the scholarly expectations of a thesis or thesis project; only the format, organization, and some other elements differ.
