Plant science is a diverse major offered collaboratively by the departments of Agronomy, Environmental Horticulture and Plant Pathology. The plant science degree offers diverse specializations that provide a range of opportunities in the food and agricultural sector. The specializations are designed to provide students with an interdisciplinary perspective of these areas. The degree prepares graduates for careers in production agriculture, turf and ornamentals production, agribusiness sales and marketing, design and management of gardens, private consulting in plant production and protection, restoration of land and aquatic spaces, public policy and regulation related to agriculture, community garden management, international agriculture and field or laboratory technical support. Plant science can also be used as preparation for studies in graduate and professional school. This specialization prepares students for professions in crop production and management. Students will explore and understand production practices that meet present world food needs without compromising quality of life for future generations. Courses emphasize aquatic and terrestrial weed management, optimizing management practices (including energy utilization, nutrient management and tillage for soil and water conservation), sustainability and environmental issues.
