Tobruk University is an officially recognized public higher education institution based in Tobruk in East Libya. Tobruk University was established on 28/09/ 1991 as The Faculty of Social Science –Omar Al Mukhtar University.
In 2000, a resolution was issued by The Higher Education Ministry to establish universities in different Libyan cities including Almasira Al Kubra University in Tobruk (The Greet March University). It continued to deliver higher education, and established a number of new faculties.
In 2005 a new strategy was introduced by The Higher Education and resulted in merging a number of universities. As a result, Al Masira Alkubra University, Derna University and Omar Al Mukhtar University were all merged under Omar Al Mukhtar University.
Based on a resolution by the government in 2016, it was officially founded under the name: Tobruk University.
Tobruk University consists of 15 faculties in 6 main campuses, with more than 9000 studentsThe university has also 3 main research and training centers. Due to its unique location in the Far East, it provides higher education for students in an area of around 83000 km2. It employs 520 full time academic staff members and a number of contractual members in addition to 900 administrative staff. Since 2016, more than 4500 students have graduated from Tobruk University.
Tobruk University has set a strategic plan to ensure delivering high quality education, and to increase its research activities. As part of this strategic plan, a number of scientific conferences and workshops have already been organized, and 3 peer reviewed journals have been recently founded. The university is also actively involved in supporting the local society through providing support to the local authorities and organizations.
