To meet the growing global demand for technology and talent driven by the rapid development of nuclear energy, and with the direct support of the Chinese and French governments, Sun Yat-sen University and the Civil Nuclear Engineers Teaching Alliance, led by the French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission and Grenoble Polytechnic University, formally established the Sino-French Institute of Nuclear Engineering and Technology in 2010. Focusing on the major needs of China's nuclear energy sector, this discipline has established core research directions in Nuclear Science and Engineering, Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Materials, Nuclear Technology and Applications, Radiation Protection and Environmental Protection, and Nuclear Physics and Nuclear Data. In 2011, this discipline was approved to offer a Master's degree in Nuclear Science and Technology (a first-level discipline); in 2013, it was approved to offer a Master's degree in Nuclear Energy and Nuclear Technology Engineering (a professional discipline); in 2016, it established a Doctoral program in Nuclear Engineering Mechanics (a second-level discipline); in 2021, it was approved to offer a Doctoral degree in Nuclear Science and Technology (a first-level discipline); and in 2022, it was approved to offer a Doctoral degree in Energy and Power Engineering (a professional discipline).

The Sino - French Institute of Nuclear Engineering and Technology at Sun Yat-sen University will adopt an application - assessment system for doctoral admissions in 2026, based on a comprehensive evaluation of applicants' qualities and abilities. Applicants must register and submit application materials in accordance with the 2026 Doctoral Admissions Brochure of Sun Yat-sen University and the relevant requirements of the Sino-French Institute of Nuclear Engineering and Technology.
