In 2016, in response to the urgent needs of the nation and local governments for advanced science and technology and high-end professional talents, to serve the "Belt and Road" initiative and the major strategic needs of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area construction and the building of a maritime power, and to promote the integrated development of arts, sciences, medicine and engineering, Sun Yat-sen University established the School of Civil Engineering, re-established the discipline of civil engineering, and appointed Professor Wang Fuming, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as its first dean.

The college integrates civil engineering with disciplines such as water conservancy, transportation, and marine engineering, with "water and soil integration" as its characteristic. It focuses on the common key issues of disaster prevention and control in water-soil (rock)-structure coupling systems, and prioritizes the development of six disciplines: infrastructure operation and maintenance, underground space engineering, marine civil engineering, urban water affairs, water resources and water ecology, and smart river and sea engineering. It strives to build a world-class "large civil engineering" discipline with Chinese characteristics.

The college has established a complete talent training system encompassing undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs, boasts a high-level faculty, and excellent teaching and research facilities. It offers master's and doctoral programs in two first-level disciplines: Civil Engineering and Hydraulic Engineering, as well as professional master's and doctoral programs in Civil and Hydraulic Engineering. Currently, there are 545 master's and doctoral students.

The School of Civil Engineering at Sun Yat-sen University will adopt an application - assessment system for doctoral admissions in 2026, based on a comprehensive evaluation of applicants' qualities and abilities. Applicants must register and submit application materials in accordance with the 2026 Doctoral Admissions Brochure of Sun Yat-sen University and the relevant requirements of the School of Civil Engineering.
