In 1978, the Surveying and Mapping Teaching and Research Section was established within the Department of Geography at Sun Yat-sen University. In 1989, the Sun Yat-sen University Remote Sensing Application Center was established, and master's students began enrolling at the same time. In 1996, the Cartography and GIS Teaching and Research Section was established, and master's students in Cartography and Geographic Information Systems began enrolling in 1997, and undergraduate students in Geographic Information Systems began enrolling in 2001. In 2002, the Department of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Engineering was established, and doctoral students in Cartography and Geographic Information Systems began enrolling in 2004. Undergraduate students in Geographic Information Systems (Surveying and Mapping Engineering) were added in 2006, and master's students in Surveying and Mapping Engineering began enrolling in 2017. Master's and doctoral students in Resources and Environment began enrolling in 2019. This major was designated a key discipline in Guangdong Province and a national key discipline under development in 2007, selected as a first-class undergraduate major construction site in Guangdong Province in 2019, and selected as a national first-class undergraduate major construction site in 2020.

This program boasts a well-structured faculty with significant influence in the field of geographic information science both domestically and internationally. Currently, there are 27 faculty members, including 10 professors and 17 associate professors. Among them are 1 recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 3 recipients of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, 2 recipients of the National Science Fund for Young Talents, and 3 provincial-level talents. The faculty is primarily composed of young and middle-aged professionals, most of whom have overseas study or work experience. The program has established first-class geographic information teaching and research laboratories, including the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Urbanization and Geographic Environment Spatial Simulation, the Guangdong Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Water Environment Remote Sensing Monitoring, the Guangdong Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Public Safety and Disaster, and the Guangdong Branch of the National Remote Sensing Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology. The hardware and software conditions for teaching and research have reached international advanced levels. This program has undertaken national-level research projects such as major national projects, key research and development projects, the "973" Program, the "863" Program, and key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Major research areas include: 1. Spatiotemporal information acquisition and automatic modeling; 2. Spatiotemporal data mining and process simulation; 3. Ecological environment remote sensing and emergency response; 4. Smart city services and decision support. This major is oriented towards serving the economic construction and social development of the country and South China.
