The Human Geography major at Sun Yat-sen University is one of the first national key disciplines and the first batch of national first-class undergraduate program construction sites in China. It is an important talent training base and science and technology service platform in the field of human geography in China. The program has a long history and has produced a group of renowned scholars who have made significant contributions to the development of Chinese human geography, such as Professor Cao Tingfan, one of the founders of economic geography in China, and Professor Xu Xueqiang, one of the founders of modern urban geography in China. After decades of development, this major has become a top domestic talent training base for human geography with considerable international influence, leading the way in discipline and major development. Faculty members such as Xu Xueqiang, Bao Jigang, and Xue Desheng have successively served as members of the Geography Discipline Evaluation Group of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, members of the Ministry of Education's Teaching Steering Committee for Geographical Science Majors, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Geographical Society, and Deputy Director of the Geography Education Working Committee, among other important positions. Textbooks compiled by teachers in this major, such as "Urban Geography," "Tourism Geography," and "Regional Analysis and Regional Planning," have won national honors as excellent geography books and general higher education textbooks, becoming important teaching references for related disciplines and courses in China.
Currently, there are 36 full-time faculty members in this major, including 12 professors, 21 associate professors or senior lecturers, and 4 nationally recognized outstanding young talents. Research areas cover urban geography, economic geography, rural geography, socio-cultural geography, transportation geography, health geography, tourism geography, behavioral geography, urban and rural planning, tourism planning, and land use planning. 70% of the faculty have overseas study or visiting experience, with 2 foreign faculty members, many serving as committee members in international and domestic academic organizations, as well as deputy editors or editorial board members of top domestic and international journals. This major has strong research capabilities, consistently ranking among the top three nationwide in the number of national fund grants. Four faculty members were selected for Stanford University's 2023 Top 2% Global Scientists list. Research institutions relying on the Human Geography major include the China Institute of Regional Coordinated Development and Rural Construction, Guangdong Key Laboratory of Urbanization and Spatial Simulation of Geographical Environment, Sun Yat-sen University Institute of Urbanization, and Sun Yat-sen University Center for Urban and Regional Studies.
